#  Modeling the Operating Impact of the Orange Line Fleet Replacement 

 



The Field Lab partnered with the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to examine capital budgeting considerations associated with replacing the MBTA’s Orange Line fleet, including cost structures related to new rolling stock and integration with existing systems.

Students worked with MBTA staff to analyze capital budgeting elements associated with fleet replacement, including upfront capital costs, operating and maintenance considerations, and integration of new technologies within the existing transit system.



 

 ### Areas of Focus

The team examined capital budgeting considerations related to fleet replacement, operating and maintenance cost implications of new rolling stock, and cost drivers associated with introducing new technologies into an existing transit system. The analysis focused on documenting cost structures and budgeting considerations related to fleet modernization.
